Narrative
LICKINC CO., OH – Six people died, and 18 people went to the hospital Tuesday after a chain-reaction crash involving an 18-wheeler, a charter bus, and three other vehicles.
The series of collisions occurred around 9 a.m. on I-70 westbound, approximately 26 miles east of Columbus. This is in the Etna area in southwest Licking County.
The investigation thus far indicates that a semi-truck rear-ended a charter bus carrying 55 people, including the driver, high school students, and chaperones. The collision started a chain-reaction of crashes involving a total of five vehicles, three of which caught fire.
Police say that three people from the bus died in the accident. Authorities identified them as 18-year-old John W. Mosely, 18-year-old Jeffery D. Worrell, and a 15-year-old girl.
Three people from one of the passenger vehicles involved in the accident also died. They’ve been identified as Kristy Gaynor, 39, Dave Kennat, 56, and Shannon Wigfield, 45.
Medics transported the bus driver, the driver of another passenger vehicle, the driver of the commercial vehicle, and 15 students to the hospital with injuries of varying severity.
Officials still aren’t certain what caused the accident. A full investigation is underway.
